Team South Dakota High School girls would win with a 3-0 shutout in the quarterfinals on Saturday, but then fall 1-0 in a shootout in the semifinals Saturday night coming up just short of making the championship game.
Team SD would score three first period goals in the quarterfinals against Norwich Hockey Club of Connecticut with the help of some Oahe girls. Elliot Bertsch would assist on both of the first two goals while Kallee Behm would assist on the third goal. It would also lead to a nine save shutout from Aberdeen’s Chloe Vikander as Team SD would get back-to-back shutouts to close pool play and open the single elimination tournament. Brookings’ Sawyer Triplett scored twice with Watertown’s Harper Hendricks scoring on the power play.
In the semifinals, Brookings’ Rorii Quam would again not allow a goal through regulation and through overtime, but unfortunately Team SD did not score in any of the four periods and it would result in the game heading to a shootout. With regular season games going to a shootout in South Dakota, Team SD would be at a disadvantage and WEHL Western of Wisconsin would score on two of the three shots while Team SD would go 0-2 with Brookings’ Kinzey Grendler and Mitchell’s Makenna Tronnes both being stopped.
Team South Dakota finishes the weekend at 4-0-0-1. Grendler, Hendricks and Triplett led the team each having five points. Oahe’s Addison Hunsley finished with a goal and an assist while Bertsch had the two assists and Behm with her assist. Both Bertsch and Behm will be in St. Louis this next week playing with the 16U Team South Dakota.
