The Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones used their size to their advantage on Thursday night to beat the Stanley County Buffaloes 66-36 in the first round of the Class A state tournament in Rapid City.
Stanley County came out hot with two threes made by Paxton Deal, one on a four point play as the Buffs jumped out to seven quick points and led 13-9 after the first quarter. Then it was the bigs from the Cyclones making life difficult for the Buffaloes being outscored 16-4 in the second and trailing 25-17 at the break. Stanley County cut the deficit down to seven with a quick spurt, but the Cyclones were too much as Chris Bevers couldn’t miss in the second half scoring a game high 24 points while Emmerson Larson scored 18. Four of the five starters scored in double figures with only two points off the bench for Clark/Willow Lake. Deal would score a team high 15, but the Buffs struggled to hit shots shooting just 22% from the field. After making their first two threes in the game, the Buffs went 0-13 the rest of the way. Sully Felberg finished with a double-double for the Cyclones scoring 12 and rebounding 12. Clark/Willow Lake scored 44 points in the paint, to Stanley County’s 18.
The Buffs drop to 20-3 overall and will see a familiar face in the consolation semifinal, Region 6A foe, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte. Tip off is at 1:45 Central Time with coverage beginning around 1:15 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
