(Aberdeen, SD) – The Sully Buttes Chargers opened their first game of the class B boys state tournament Thursday night against the Freeman Flyers which resulted in a 63-55 loss setting up a date against De Smet at 12:45 p.m. Friday afternoon
Shooting was a key struggle in the first half as the Chargers shot below 30% from the field and from three point land while the other hand the Flyers were shooting above 40% from three and the field. Sully Buttes improved in the second half but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.
Another key factor of the game was scoring runs. And the first was Freeman would hit five straight threes while the Chargers couldn’t get a bucket for nearly three minutes. On the other hand, the Chargers would have runs of their own, but not a 15 point run like the Freeman in the first half.
A historic moment took place in the second half of the loss on Thursday when Wesley Witler took sole position as the all-time leader in scoring on a 28 point night breaking the record in third quarter. The Chargers 34 point second half would not be enough as the Chargers got as close as three in the game in the late stages but when Freeman needed to make their shots they did, spoiling any comeback for Sully Buttes in the game.
With the loss on Thursday night, the Sully Buttes Chargers will battle De Smet at the Barnett Center, Friday afternoon at 12:45. Wyatt Burichka will have coverage on Country 95.3 F.M. and on YouTube at Country 95.3 Sports with coverage beginning around 12:15 tip off set for 12:45 PM.
