The Team South Dakota High School girls squad would beat Sunflower Gold of Minnesota, comprised of some of the best high school girls players in the state 4-3 on Wednesday opening up the National Tournament with a win.
Team SD would trail in the first period for just a little over a minute before Brookings’ Sawyer Triplett would tie the game up and then Sioux Falls’ Alyssa Ver Hoeven would give South Dakota the lead with the help of Oahe’s Addison Hunsley getting the primary assist. It would be 2-2, however, after the first period and again after the second. Brookings’ Kinzey Grendler would give Team SD the lead with 6:46 left in the third and Triplett would put in her second of the game with an empty net with just 54 seconds left to seal the win even after Sunflower Gold scored to make it 4-3. Brookings’ Rorii Quam would stop 27 of 30 shots in the win. The two teams battling are comprised of some of the best high school girls in each respective state. It’s a big win for South Dakota over Minnesota, especially to open the tournament.
Team South Dakota will face WEHL Western out of Wisconsin this afternoon at 1:00. WEHL beat Team Wyoming 2-0 in its opening game of the tournament.
