The Lyman Raiders now have the highs and lows of the 1 vs. 8 matchup this year. The girls were upset last week as the top seed in the first round. The boys, as the eight seed, upset the top seed Viborg-Hurley on Thursday to open the Class B state tournament.
The Raiders held on for a 49-44 win over the Cougars as it’s only the fourth loss of the entire season. A 17-10 third quarter scoring output from Lyman gave them a lead 37-32 after trailing 22-20 at the break. The Raiders went 13-16 from the free throw line in the game to help seal the win, but also shot 41% from the field. MJ Diehm led the team with 15 points while Dawsen Volmer and Josiah Vaad each had 10 as Lyman was balanced in scoring throughout the afternoon to stun the top seed. Diehm also grabbed seven boards for the Raiders who advance to face the fifth seeded Castlewood Warriors who upset the fourth seed Aberdeen Christian Knights.
The Raiders and Knights will play in the first semifinal on Friday at 5:00 with the winner to the state championship on Saturday.
