PIERRE, (KCCR) — Spring begins today and drought has already made expansion deeper into South Dakota. Statewide, two areas of extreme drought have been introduced this week. One is in central Custer and Fall River Counties. The second is along the Missouri River in Charles Mix, Bon Homme, Yankton and Clay Counties. South Dakota is 37-percent drought free. Abnormally dry areas are up one-percent to 62-percent. Moderate drought is up nine-percent; severe drought up six-percent and extreme drought is now at two-percent. This week, moderate drought has grown 42-percent in Lyman County to 68-percent. Moderate drought is up 93-percent in Buffalo County from zero last week. Brule and Tripp Counties are now 100-percent in moderate drought. Hand County is now three-percent in moderate drought in the far southeast corner. Less than five-percent increases in drought have been recorded this week in Melette and Jackson Counties. Only seven-percent of Hughes County is considered drought free while Stanley County is holding at 74-percent drought free.
