For the third time this season, the Oahe Capitals opened up with a lead and this time had a three goal lead, but for the third time, Yankton came all the way back to beat the Capitals, this one being in the state tournament Thursday in a 6-3 Yankton win.
Neither team scored in the first period as both teams were feeling each other out in the first game of this year’s state tournament. The Caps would open up scoring in the first minute of the second with Ian Schweitzer making it 1-0 before Dylan Dodson scored on a 5-on-3 goal off the face off win by Lyle Boni. Brecken Fuhrman made it 3-0, all within the first seven minutes of the second period. But the Bucks didn’t back down. Yankton made it 3-2 by the end of the second period and tied the game up in the first minute of the third as Rylan Murphy would score three third period goals including the go ahead goal as Yankton advances to the state semifinals on Friday. Jace Hand made 27 saves on 33 shots in the loss.
Oahe faces Sioux Falls East in the consolation semifinal who was upset 4-2 by seventh seeded Aberdeen. Brookings would beat Sioux Falls West 3-2 in overtime for an upset and Rushmore knocked off Watertown 8-2. The stat of the day was all four teams who scored first all lost in the first round. Day two begins at 12:00 on Friday for the Caps and Flyers with coverage beginning at 11:45 on Capital City Rock and on YouTube at Capital City Rock Sports with Jon Winkler and Jim Lloyd on the call.
