The Oahe Lady Capitals 14U would win the state tournament on Sunday in their backyard with a 3-2 overtime win against the Sioux Falls Flyers as Dakota McEntaffer stuffed in the game winning goal.
The Capitals went into the state championship on Sunday with two shutouts beating Yankton 2-0 on Friday and then Brookings also 2-0 on Saturday. Mallory Lehrkamp had a goal in each of the first two games before scoring the two goals in regulation on Sunday in the championship. Lehrkamp gave the Caps a 1-0 lead in the first and then tied the game at 2-2 late in the second period. Taylah Allerdings had two shutouts in net prior to the championship game. Allerdings made 20 saves in net including three in overtime. In overtime, the Caps were short handed, but were helped out with a penalty taken by Sioux Falls to make it 4-4. Shortly after Lehrkamp’s penalty ended to give the Caps a brief power play, the pass went from Lehrkamp to Reagan Emme who put a shot on net and a mad scramble in net would lead to McEntaffer to find it and put it past the goalie and leap into the air scoring the state championship goal. Oahe finished the year at a total of 19-1-1 becoming the second 14U team to win a state championship.
Most of these same girls will be playing at the varsity state tournament which begins Thursday in Mitchell where the Caps are the three seed facing Mitchell in the first game of the state tournament.
