PIERRE, (KCCR) — Three central South Dakota counties will host sobriety checkpoints conducted by the South Dakota Highway Patrol and South Dakota Office of Highway Safety with assistance from local law enforcement. The random checkpoints will be held in March in Hughes, Lyman and Jones County. A total of 15 are planned across the stating including Meade, Lawrence and Pennington in the west. Minnehaha, Hutchinson, Clay and Lincoln in the southeast. Beadle and Brookings and in the northeast Brown, Day and Codington. The sobriety checkpoints are aimed at reducing impaired driving and improving roadway safety. The checkpoints are funded by the state’s Office of Highway Safety. Drivers are reminded to make responsible choices and not drink and drive whether a checkpoint is near you or not. Motorists who plan on consuming alcohol should make arrangements for a designated driver or use public or commercial transportation.
