Claiming the Region 3A championship on Saturday was extra special for Pierre Governor senior Alex Oedekoven who also nabbed his 200th career win on the mat.
Oedekoven has been a part of the varsity lineup for the Governor wrestling team since he was in middle school and has success winning matches from his first year through now his senior year. He’s also been able to stay healthy and on the mat as much as possible which gives him the chance to accomplish such a feat where by all accounts, he’s only the second ever Governor to reach 200 wins in a career. Jebben Keyes, who happens to be one of his coaches, is the only other Governor to reach the milestone. Shawn Lewis, head coach of the Governors, says it was great to get the 200th win at the region tournament…
Those accomplishments sometimes can be a distraction, although for Oedekoven, it wasn’t going to get in the way of the season goal. Lewis says though, to not have to worry about it at the state tournament is something good to check off the list…
Oedekoven lost in the state championship in his junior year and will be looking to finish out his high school career with a state championship and Lewis says all 200 of those wins prior to this weekend is experience for the ultimate goal…
Oedekoven is the number one seed in the 144 heading into the state tournament which begins on Thursday.
