The Oahe Capitals boys varsity team would go 0-2 on the weekend in two starkly different games. The Caps would fall 13-0 to the Rushmore Thunder Friday night and then 3-2 to Brookings on Saturday.
Just like nearly every other game goes for the Rushmore Thunder, once they get a lead, they’re able to pour it on. The Caps and Thunder were even for the first five and a half minutes before Jaxson Reeder would open up the scoring and end up with a 5-0 lead after the first. The Thunder added seven goals in the second and another one in the third to win 13-0 as Cameron Ritter had a hat trick with Reeder and Jackson Hepper having two goals each. Wyatt Reeder would finish with six points, a goal and five assists as he finishes the regular season with 96 total points on 53 goals and 43 assists.
On Saturday, senior night the Caps played the Brookings Rangers tough. It was 1-0 after the first on a power play goal by Parker Nielsen before the Caps and Landry Van Roekel would tie the game at 1-1 after two. Aiden Bauder, on the power play, would get a deflected shot onto his stick and bury a wide open chance, his first of the year to give the Caps a 2-1 lead with 11:43 left in the third. However, Jay Harris would tie the game at 2-2 four minutes later and with just under five left in the third, Jack Lovseth would get the game winning goal to put the Brookings to 13-6-2 on the season while the Capitals fall to 10-9-0-1. Jace Hand made 30 saves on 33 shots for the Caps.
Oahe will close the season on Friday and Saturday next weekend, in Mitchell to face Yankton in a makeup game, and then to Watertown on Saturday. Both games will be on Capital City Rock and on YouTube at Capital City Rock Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
