PIERRE, (KCCR) — Avera Health has received a federal appropriation as part of the 2026 Labor, Healt and Human Services bill for the enhancement of cancer care technology. South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds requested over 10-point-one million dollars in Congressional Directed Spending so Avera can update cancer diagnostic and radiation therapy care equipment through out Avera’s footprint. The appropriation will support the purchase of a fixed C-T Scanner at Avera’s Cancer Institute in Yankton and to prepare for the replacement of linear accelerators in Pierre, Aberdeen and Mitchell. Avera President and C-E-O James Dover says the federal funding will be used to strengthen rural cancer care delivery and address gaps in timely access to high-quality diagnostic and radiation treatment in rural and frontier areas. Rounds says the batch of appropriations bills that the money for Avera is coming from also includes money for expanding regional airports and investing in affordable housing. Dover says the upgrades will reduce travel burdens, improve outcomes and ensure care to undeserved populations.
