A free throw in the final second and a 30 point night would be the way the Pierre Governor basketball teams would each get wins on Tuesday over the Brookings Bobcats with the girls winning 50-49 and the boys winning 56-47.
In the girls game, Pierre didn’t trail until the third quarter but reclaimed the lead quickly and led just about wire to wire. However, a late 11-0 run by the Bobcats tied the game at 49-49 with just eight seconds left. Molly Olson would be fouled with just 1.9 seconds remaining to head to the free throw line and would sink the first to give the Govs the lead before missing the second. But with under two seconds, the full court heave from the Bobcats had no chance of making it and the Govs picked up their fourth win of the season going to 4-11 while Brookings falls to 3-12. Olson would lead all scorers with 18 points on the night while Jordyn Kirkie had 15. Taylee and Tessa Connot each had 12 to lead the Bobcats.
Corde Austin hit 15 free throws and had a 30 point night to the lead Governor boys to their fifth win of the season as he had over half the Govs points in the win. Brookings, who fell to 1-15 had a valiant effort on their home court, but couldn’t withstand the night Austin had to get the second win of the year. Instead, Pierre will maintain its spot inside the top 16 with just four games remaining at now 5-11.
The Governors will take on Mitchell on Friday with the boys hosting and the girls traveling with the Gov girls also on the road to Lincoln on Saturday. The Governor boys game will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with tip off at 7:00.
