The Pierre Governor gymnastics team would take home seventh place overall at the state gymnastics meet in Mitchell on Friday with several individuals placing high on Saturday.
The team would compete on Friday taking seventh place of the eight teams in the Class AA state competition. The Govs scored a total of 135.8 points, less than five points from jumping to fifth place and three points ahead of eighth place Roosevelt. Harrisburg would win by 4.9 points over Mitchell to claim the team state title with Watertown narrowly finishing in third, 1.5 points back of Mitchell. Lincoln would be fourth, Brookings fifth and Yankton sixth.
On Saturday, the Governors would have individuals compete in three different categories as the Rebecca Spitzer, in her senior campaign, had the highest finish for the Govs with a 9.1 on the beam which was good for 16th place. Jaelynn Muldoon would score a 9.0333 in the beam Katelyn Maeschen had a near perfect score at a 9.9 to win the beam. On the bars, Madelyn Merrill would get an 8,3167 to lead Pierre individually with Myclane Sheppick with an 8.2333 and Muldoon a 7.9667. Maeschen of Harrisburg would win the category with a 9.75. Muldoon had a 9.0 in the floor with Spitzer finishing with an 8.7833. Maeschen again won the floor with a score of 9.8667. Maeschen also won the vault with a 9.6667 taking home all the individual category titles and the All-Around state championship with a 39.1834. Mitchell’s Kyanna Gropper would be second at 38.4167.
