Governors Bounce Back to Grab Consolation Championship at Class A Dual State Tournament

The Pierre Governor boys wrestling team would drop its first match of the day on Friday, but finished at 2-1 getting the consolation championship at the Class A Dual State Tournament in Pierre.

Pierre would lose in the first round in the 4-5 dual to Watertown 44-24 as the Govs were unable to get the wins they had the first time around and then flip the script. Alex Oedekoven and Devin Binger each had fall wins while Jordan Schafer had a tech fall win, Kalo Steely a major decision win and then Daniel Mason a decision win. But the Govs were undeterred with the loss and bounced back to beat Rapid City Central 37-29 in the consolation semifinal. Oedekoven, Binger, Alec Eilers and Gable Uhrig each got a fall win while Walker West and Porter Hunsley had tech fall victories with Rowdy Menning getting a decision win. It would be 7-7 in matches, but the Govs grabbed more bonus points to get the win. Pierre had things more well in hand against Harrisburg in the consolation championship winning 41-27 to claim the title. Pierre won eight of the 14 matches but had fall wins by West, Schafer, Hunsley and Noah Horsley while also getting a tech fall win by Mason and a decision win by Oedekoven who went 3-0 on the day.

Sturgis would take home the dual state championship for a second straight year with a 58-7 win over second seeded Aberdeen Central in the championship match. Watertown would place third. You can see a full list of the results for all the duals of the state tournament below.
