(Onida, SD) – A tough night for Sully Buttes basketball was in Onida Thursday night with Mobridge Pollock sweeping Sully Buttes 85-29 in the girls game and 71-63 in the boys contest. The loss for the Sully Buttes boys was their first loss at home in almost two full seasons.
The fast pace and three point show from Mobridge-Pollock Lady Tigers in the girls contest was a struggle for the Chargers defense despite the limited turnovers and forcing the Lady Tigers to run offensive sets. Mobridge-Pollock ended with shooting 30 attempts from three converting on 15. They were 9-19 in the first half. Sully Buttes struggled in the first quarter shooting, but was able to generate a decent second quarter. By then, the Lady Tigers were 48-18 after half and running clock was activated in the second half.
Scottlyn Kinney has been a focal point of the Chargers offense. Most opportunities the Chargers go to Kinney in the post, points are usually are put up on the scoreboard. Have one of her highest scoring nights of the season with 16 points. Mobridge-Pollock did outscore the Chargers in the second half 37-11 to make the final 82-29.
The boys contest was a close from tip-off to the final buzzer. The game ended with five lead changes and two ties. The Chargers never had a lead after any quarter in this game. Scoring runs by the Chargers were answered by the Tigers. Shooter Fedrick for the Tigerswas a struggle for the defensive side for Sully Buttes surrendering 24 points.
After a 43-33 first half, the Chargers cut it to within one score to begin the fourth. Sully Buttes were outscored 20-14 in the forth, with free throws not being made by the Tigers in the first three quarters, eventually being made when they mattered the most. Wesley Witter led scoring 26 points for the Charger. Sully Buttes second half output at 30-28 wasn’t enough for them to pull off the comeback. With the 71-63 loss Thursday night, Sully Buttes boys have a 17 game home winning streak snapped dating back to last season were they won ten and this season their first seven.
Sully Buttes girls drop to 2-15 on the season while the boys drop to 12-5. Sully Buttes basketball is back on the road Saturday at the Warner Classic. The girls will take on James Valley Christian around 3:30 p.m. CST. The boys will follow at around 5 p.m. against Aberdeen Roncalli.
