Pink the Rink on Saturday would see some exciting games for varsity action, but both Oahe Capitals teams would lose to Aberdeen with the girls falling 3-2 and the boys dropping a 6-5 overtime game.
Rachel Siefken would pick up a hat trick in the win scoring with just 15 seconds remaining in both the first and second periods as Aberdeen would lead 1-0 after the first and after Aubrey Stewart tied the game early in the second, Siefken reclaimed the lead just 26 seconds later and the Cougars would lead 3-1 after two. Elliot Bertsch would score her second goal of the season through a screen to make it 3-2 with still 12 minutes remaining in the third, but the Caps could not find a way to score the final tally to tie the game as Oahe falls to 13-5 and Aberdeen improves to 4-12-0-1.
In the boys game, it was penalty filled with Aberdeen having seven power play opportunities including a five minute major power play. However, during the five minute power play, Oahe scored two short handed goals to help build a 4-1 lead with Dylan Dodson picking up a hat trick along with an Ian Schweitzer goal. But, the power play chances would come to be a benefit of the Cougars as Aberdeen battled back to score two power play goals in the second to make it 4-3 and then a third power play goal to tie the game at 4-4. Trayke Roehrich would score with 47 seconds left in the third to give the Cougars the lead forcing the Caps to pull the goalie on the ensuing face off. The Caps would get a show away with the rebound eventually pushed in by Dodson to tie the game on his fourth goal with three seconds remaining to force overtime and get a big point. Nearly three minutes in, a faceoff win for Aberdeen and Austin Schmit would take a shot that would be redirected into the net to win the game as Aberdeen gets within two points of eighth place in the standings. Carter Vilhauer finished with a goal and four assists on the night.
Oahe will be at home next weekend with the boys playing Friday night against Mitchell with the girls and boys playing Saturday against Sioux Falls and Sioux Falls East. All three games will be on Capital City Rock and on YouTube at Capital City Rock Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
