Just a couple of weeks ago, Ryan Noyes coach of the 2012 and 2013 state championship wrestling teams, along with those teams were inducted into the Pierre Hall of Fame during the East/West Duals.
The back-to-back state championships helped start a dynasty run of Governor state championships in wrestling as the Govs won four straight state titles from 2015-2018 making the Governors winning six titles in seven years while being the runner up in 2014 and again in 2019. Noyes was the head coach of the crew to win those two state titles in 2012-13. Noyes says its special to for the team and him to be inducted to the Hall of Fame…
In the 2011-12 season, Caleb Stoltenburg would win the 132 pound championship as a junior as a total of 10 of the 14 wrestlers would hit the podium as Pierre scored a total of 158 points to Hurons 145 to win the state title. The next year in the 2012-13 season, while the Governors wouldn’t have an individual state champion, Stoltenburg along with Jebben Keyes and Trey Maier would all make the state championship match with nine wrestlers making the podium as Pierre scored a total of 180 points winning by 20.5 points over Rapid City Central. It was the first two state championships for Pierre since 1974. Noyes says it was a dominating team night in and night out…
Noyes says the coaching staff was willing to work hard for the kids…
As far as being in the Hall of Fame, Noyes says it hasn’t really sunk in yet…
The teams are the first wrestling teams to be inducted to the Hall of Fame since the 1974 team was inducted in 2020.
