The Pierre Governor basketball teams would both fall to Yankton on Tuesday as the boys would lose 51-43 at home and the girls would drop a 54-33 decision on the road.
Both teams in the girls game were seeking its fourth win of the season as both were 3-8 heading into the game. Yankton opened up with a lead and tried to keep the Governors at arm’s length away throughout the ballgame. Molly Olson would score 20 of the 33 points on the night for the Governors with Jordyn Kirkie adding in six as Pierre has dropped its fourth straight game and eight of the last nine before returning home for a Saturday game against the Tea Titans.
In the boys game, Pierre struggled to make shots early on being held without a field goal in the first quarter, but only trailed 10-6 after one. Yankton increased its lead to 10 at the break 24-14, but the Govs fought back and had it 31-30 early in the fourth before turnovers plagued the Govs comeback bid and Yankton hit big shots down the stretch and went 6-9 from the free throw line to secure its second win of the season at now 2-10 while Pierre drops to 4-10. Jackson Kudera had the game high 16 points with three made threes while Owen Eidsness had 13 and Beck Ryken with 10 for the Bucks who had just four turnovers after the first quarter. Pierre finished the night with 18 turnovers, 15 coming after the first quarter. Corde Austin had the team high 15 points while Cooper Terwilliger would secure a double double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Governor boys are off until next Tuesday when they travel to Huron while the girls will be at home on Saturday against the Tea Area Titans with a 3:00 tip off from Riggs High School.
