(Onida, SD) – Sully Buttes basketball returned the home court Tuesday night against Jones County. The Chargers will look to bounce back after a sweep against Warner on Saturday. The girls contest favored Jones County 54-34. The Chargers boys forced the split secured an big 84-54 victory.
The Sully Buttes girls would start slow but manage to cut the lead to with-in three with their zone defense forcing the Lady Coyotes to take make their possessions longer than maybe anticipated. A three at the end of the first give Jones County a 15-9 lead after one quarter of play. While the defense play was better Tuesday night for Sully Buttes, second chance opportunities, turnovers, and three barrage in would spoil any chances for the Chargers to secure their second straight win at home this season.
Sully Buttes were outscored 20-6 in the second quarter, but would go toe for toe in the second half 19-19 second half output. But the shooting struggles in the second and the 20 point second quarter from the Lady Coyotes helped seal the 54-34 win. The Chargers would finished shooting 30% from the field with 22 turnovers on the night to fall to 2-12 on the season.
Scottlyn Kinney led scoring for the Chargers now in back to back games with nine points. Jadyn Jaeger and Ellie Nelson added eight, Nevaeh Westphal finished the night with seven points.
The Sully Buttes boys flipped the scrip the other way in the second game of the double header. But the Chargers would start off slow and were trailing 17-14 in the first quarter of play. The Chargers were looking to show a difference from Saturday to Tuesday on the defensive side. The last three quarters would prove to be that case. Sully Buttes outscored Jones County 70-37 in the final three quarters including a 45-26 second half out put. The Chargers were pit-pocketing the Coyotes in turnovers finishing with a total 28 turnovers for Jones County to just nine for the Chargers.
Four Chargers scored in double digits led by Wesley Wittler scoring 26. Easton Moore finished with 18, Jett Yackley with 12 and Gavin Colson with 11 to improve to 10-4 on the season and holding onto the winning streak.
Sully Buttes have a couple days of rest before making a short trip to Gettysburg Friday. It will be the first time in many season that it won’t Gettysburg won’t be under the Porter County name.
