Fort Pierre did join on as a member of the Western Dakota Regional Water System. The system is a proposals to pipe Missouri River water to western South Dakota, similar to what Mid Dakota, Web Water and the Lewis and Clark Regional Water System are already doing to bring Missouri River water to numerous eastern South Dakota cities. In the case of Lewis and Clark, that system brings water from near Vermillion to parts of South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. South Dakota Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds have introduced a bill that includes 10 million dollars for a feasibility study for the Western Dakota system.
