(Hitchcock, SD) – Sully Buttes basketball was once again on the road Thursday to Hitchcock-Tulare to battle the Patriots. It was the first time in over a decade the Chargers played in Hitchcock. The Chargers girls fell 63-39 while the boys picked up their second win of the season 68-54.
The Sully Buttes girls saw the turnover game go against them finishing with 28 turnovers on the night with the Lady Patriots converting on easy layups. The first quarter was the closets that the Chargers trailed after one quarter of play. Five points from Ellie Nelson in the first out of the ten points helped had the Chargers trailing 15-10 after one quarter of play.
Second quarter Sully Buttes kept pace with the Patriots but were once again outscored 14-13. The Chargers had five in the scorers column in the second and it was once again led by Nelson who scored all ten of her points in the first half. The Chargers seniors Jayden Jeager, Scottlyn Kinney, Berkley Birney, and Nevaeh Westphal help the scoring to stay within reach of the Lady Patriots. Sully Buttes still trailed 29-23 after one half of play.
The turnovers showed in the third quarter with a 23-6 third quarter outing from the Lady Patriots. Despite many turnovers into points, Hitchcock-Tulare added three threes in the quarter to see the high scoring quarter making 52-29 after three quarters of play. Sully Buttes kept pace in the fourth quarter, but the third quarter scoring was a lead to big to overcome for the Chargers falling 63-39 dropping to 2-11 on the season.
Nelson led scoring for the Chargers with 10, Scottlyn Kinney added 9 on the night, and Jeager and Birney finished with seven each in the loss.
The Charger boys put up 42 points in the first half of play scoring 21 in each of the first two quarters of the contest. The Sully Buttes defense in the first quarter showed up in a big forcing tough shots for the Patriots in a 68-54 win for the Patriots.
It wasn’t the just the three point game this time for the Chargers to boost their offense. Sully Buttes were getting points everywhere they wanted including off turnovers, put backs, and floaters. The defense in the first allowed the Chargers to outpace the Hitchcock-Tulare 42-26 after one half of play.
Sully Buttes was outscored 28-26 in the second half, even with more shots falling in for the Patriots, the Chargers held their end to hold off any attempt for a comeback. winning 68-54.
Wesley Wittler finished the night scoring 20 points, Jett Yackley added 15, while Gavin Colson had ten on the night to improve to 8-3 on the season.
