The Pierre Governor wrestling teams will have a massive weekend at home with the girls wrestling in a tournament on Friday and the boys hosting the East/West duals on Saturday.
The Governor girls would place third in the Harrisburg tournament last week Friday and this Friday will be looking for its first team tournament win on the year taking on plenty of wrestlers from around the state. While Pierre is home for several duals throughout the season, this is the only tournament hosted by Pierre this season.
Saturday, the Governor boys will host the annual East/West duals as the Govs will also face Harrisburg in a make up dual from December which was postponed due to high winds making travel dangerous. Pierre is 6-1 in duals after the loss to Watertown last Thursday, but on Saturday will face some very competitive teams. Sturgis, Rapid City Central and Stevens will be the three West River teams to face the Govs. Sturgis is last year’s dual state champion and Class A team state champion while also being 11-0 in duals. Central is just outside of the top eight of the Class A standings at 19-6. Stevens is currently 0-2 in duals and Harrisburg is 10-2 and in sixth place in the standings. Pierre, by seed points, is still in first place in the standings.
During the East/West duals, Pierre will induct the 2012-2013 Governor wrestling teams who went back-to-back in state champions coached by Ryan Noyes. An hour after the East/West duals end, the celebration will be at the bowling alley with food and drinks available. All former wrestlers, managers, coaches, families, and friends are invited to join in celebrating this special occasion.
The tournament on Friday begins at 4:00 at Riggs High school with the East/West duals beginning at 11:00 AM on Saturday.
