PIERRE, (KCCR) — Limited visibility due to blowing snow and whiteout conditions Friday are being considered contributing factors in a multi-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 90. The crash happened five miles west of Reliance around 3:45 Friday afternoon. Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates a semi traveling west on the Interstate slowed due to a possible crash. A Mercury Sable with four occupants rear ended the semi and started a chain reaction crash involving three other vehicles. The front seat occupants of the Sable were killed. They include the driver, a 28 year-old man from Colome and the passenger, a 27 year-old man from Martin. Both were using seat belts. The rear seat passengers sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured. Four people were in the third vehicle, a Ford F-150 pickup; two people were in a second F-150 and one person was in the fifth vehicle, a G-M-C Yukon. Seat belts were used by everyone in the first pickup and the Yukon. Seat belts were not in use by the occupants of the second pickup.
