(Onida, SD) – Sully Buttes basketball hosted a double header on Thursday night which saw them hosting Miller in a interclass contests. Sully Buttes lost to Miller the previous season and were looking to turn the tides around for 2026. The Lady Rustlers from Miller would take the girls game 45-12 while the Sully Buttes boys pulled off a fourth quarter rally to win 60-57.
The Charger girls struggled to shoot from the field and the turnover game return again. Sully Buttes would make just three made shots from the field while turning the basketball over 25 times on the night. Half their points would come from the line. Sully Buttes highest scoring quarter would be six in the second quarter. The Chargers drop to 1-9 on the season after falling to Miller 45-12
The Sully Buttes boys were looking to win their 17th in a row at home and won it in dramatic fashion. The Rustlers had the lead after the first three quarters and were holding the Chargers in check sustaining their lead. They were needing to find the rebounds and points that were missing Wesley Wittler who was out for Thursdays game.
After a slow start with block shots and turnovers, the Chargers settled into their way of play and rode the storm. Three players finished with double digit scoring but it was the depth that would highlight the night for the Chargers.
Sully Buttes would score 20 points in the fourth quarter which was the most by either team in one quarter of play. It was a slow gradual climb back into the game and eventually taking the game. The first big play would happen with Cooper Falkenhagen who got his first start on Thursday night would come up with a big block shot to keep the Chargers within reach in the late stages of the game.
Coach White drew up the play to give Gavin Colson the shot for the lead being up 58-57. Bretton Barber came up with a big turnover to allow the Chargers to eat a few more seconds. Jett Yackley would added the free throws to force a prayer three for the Rustlers which would be missed and rebounded by the Chargers to win their 17 straight home win.
Yackley led scoring for Sully Buttes with 25 points, Gavin Colson finished with 18, and Easton Moore with nine points for the Chargers. The three point win improves the Chargers to 7-1 on the season.
Sully Buttes basketball will have the weekend off before returning to the court Tuesday at Timber Lake. Tip-off for the girls is set for 6:30 with the boys to follow. Country 95.3 will have the coverage.
