PIERRE, (KCCR) — Prospective candidates for various county and statewide offices are beginning to take out and submit petition signatures to run for office in the 2026 primary election. While early, so far Susan Lamb of Onida has submitted petitions to run for Sully County Auditor. Greg Swanson of Fort Pierre has returned petitions to run for Stanley County Sheriff. Greg Yackley and William Floyd Jr. will be running for County Commission seats in Sully County in June. Two Precinct Committeemen have submitted petitions in Hughes County. They include Larry Eliason in Precinct Four and Regan Bollweg in Precinct Seven. Those are the only petition submissions from central South Dakota so far. Notably, the only legislative candidate to turn in petitions so far is Senator Ernie Otten of Tea. Possible candidates for office have until March 31st to file their petitions. Independent candidate have until April 28th. The voter registration deadline for the June 2nd Primary is May 18th. Absentee voting will begin for the Primary on April 17th.
