For the first time since playing for the Sioux Falls Power, Pierre native, Carter Sanderson will be playing hockey in South Dakota as the Muskegon Lumberjacks are in Sioux Falls to face the Stampede.
The USHL Clark Cup Champion and Gold Medal winning Sanderson spent his time through his eighth grade year playing for the Oahe Capitals including a varsity season with the Caps when he was in eighth grade. Sanderson went to play at Northstar Christian Academy before playing with the Sioux Falls Power his sophomore year and then being drafted by the Lumberjacks of the USHL heading into his junior year. He is a sixth round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the first ever South Dakotan to be drafted. Sanderson and the Lumberjacks are playing its lone games against the Stampede in Sioux Falls for the first time in two years both Friday and Saturday night at the Denny Sanford Premier Center. On the season, the defending champion Lumberjacks are fourth in the Eastern Conference at 22-9, five points out of first place. Sanderson has eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points which is third on the team in assists and fifth on the team in total points. The Stampede are 20-10 and in first place in the Western Conference and have scored the third most goals in all of the USHL.
On top of everything else, on Wednesday, Sanderson was named the next captain of the Lumberjacks after Tynan Lawrence, the previous captain, reported to his college at Boston University. Sanderson was previously an alternate captain but will be wearing the āCā for the first time when he plays in Sioux Falls on Friday.
Puck drop on Friday is at 7:05 with a 6:05 puck drop on Saturday at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.
