PIERRE, (KCCR) — The Unified Judicial System is opening the doors to the state’s Supreme Court to visitors. South Dakota’s Supreme Court courtroom is one of the few remaining original Supreme Court courtroom still in use today. The courtroom, just off the Rotunda on the second floor of the State Capitol building, has been closed for tours and viewing since the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks over 2025 years ago. The decision to reopen access to the courtroom was made as part of a strategic priority to build trust and confidence in the Court system through transparency, communication, education and community engagement. The Courtroom was restored to it’s 1910 vintage in 1989 with repainted and refinished walls and furniture to match original colors. The Supreme Court courtroom can be viewed Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Central Time. The public can also attend proceedings of the Court in the room during oral arguments while in session.
