The Stanley County basketball teams are set for its first doubleheader of the season tonight as the Buffaloes travel to Miller with three of the four teams opening the season.
The Lady Buffs are the only team to have played so far this year, with a 50-38 loss to Chamberlain on Tuesday at home. Tonight, the Rustler girls team along with both boys teams will open the season. The Miller girls would finish last season at 18-5 making the SoDak 16 as the 10 seed, but falling to Sioux Valley coming up just short of making the state tournament. Only two seniors graduated from last year’s team but this year will be a senior heavy squad. Jolie Palmer, Gracen Werdel, Kate Lichty, Paige Werdel, Jayce Pugh, Kaihlyn Anderberg and Madelyn Saienga are all seniors on the squad with just a few underclassmen for the Rustlers. They want to build on the experience from last year and try and make a run at the state tournament. Stanley County lost to Miller 42-12 in the Rustlers first game of the season last year.
For the boys side, Stanley County came up just short of the SoDak 16 last year, finishing at 16-6 falling to Mobridge-Pollock in the Region 6A quarterfinals. Kaden Montana graduates along with fellow classmates Kelby Olson, Ethan Leafgrean, Blaize Frost, Austin Boxley and Noah Baldwin. The Buffs return two captains and All-conference players in junior Eddie Duffy and senior Paxton Deal. Weston Prince, Brendon Bothwell, Teegyn Breitag, Q Bourne and Trevor Caldwell all head into their senior years. Miller went 11-10 last season falling in the first round of the Region 6A tournament with a road loss to Platte-Geddes. The Rustlers graduated just two seniors last year and will have five seniors heading into this season. Stanley County opened the year with a win over the Rustlers 54-41 last season.
Tip off of the girls game is scheduled for 6:30 with the boys game to follow at the Armory in Miller.
