The winter sports season is officially getting underway on Thursday as the Pierre Governor gymnastics team will be in Huron to kick off the season with a triangular.
This year’s team will have a different look with different names on both the varsity and coaching position. The Governors graduated Kirsten Korber, Isabel Jirsa, Ryen Sheppick, KaCee Wilson and Emilia Loe, all of which participated in the state gymnastics meet last year. Rebecca Spitzer, Myclane Sheppick and Madelyn Merrill return from competing in the state competition last year. Spitzer is one of two seniors on the team with Sabrina Bartlett while both Sheppick and Merrill are sophomores heading into the year. Mikah Miller also takes over as head coach of the Governors after Rebecca Feller had been the coach for the last several years. Miller, who’s maiden name is Moser, was an outstanding gymnast for the Governors during her time at Pierre. Now as she moves into the head coaching job, Miller says it’s been even better and smoother than she could have hoped for…
Going into the first meet, the Governors will be in Huron and competing in a triangular along with Chamberlain. With a lot of spots open from last year’s team, Miller says it’s a great opportunity to start the season and see a lot of girls compete right away both on the JV and varsity side…
Miller does admit there are some nerves, but its the first meet nerves and ready to get the season underway…
The Governors open the season on Thursday at 5:30 in Huron.
