FORT PIERRE, (KCCR) — Fort Pierre celebrates the Christmas season tomorrow night with the annual lighting of the city Christmas tree. In previous years, wagon rides have been a part of the festivities, but due to the spread of a deadly virus, those rides are being suspended. Equid alphaherpesvirus-One is behind a deadly horse virus outbreak across the country. E-H-V-One can cause fever and upper respiratory issues for horses, but can evolve into E-H-M or Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy. E-H-M is a neurological form of the disease. Proper guidelines call for keeping horses away from each other, quarantining infected animals, preventing nose-to-nose contact, not sharing of equipment between horses and caretakers changing clothing between groups or using disposable personal protective gear. The chili and soup cook off is still a go and more entries are needed. If you’re interested in submitting an entry call 605-223-7603. The event runs from four to seven pm in downtown Fort Pierre.
