PIERRE, (KCCR) — Twenty-six Avera Health facilities, including two in central South Dakota have earned 2025 Performance Leadership Awards for excellence from the Chartis Center for Rural Health. The awards recognize top quartile performance among rural hospitals in the categories of quality, outcomes and/or patient perspective. Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre was recognized for Outcomes wile Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller was recognized for Outcomes, Quality and Patient Perspective. Avera Chief Medical Officer Kevin Post says Avera excels at rural heath care and the long list of awards is validation of the high quality care provided to communities across Avera’s footprint. The Performance Leadership Awards are the result of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX, a comprehensive and objective framework for assessing how rural hospitals are performing. Chartis Executive Director Michael Topchik says this year’s recipients are establishing a standard of excellence for other rural hospitals.
