The Pierre Governors are rightfully back on top of 11AA as the Govs won 56-35 over Yankton in the state championship a couple of weeks ago and now the Govs place six on the 11AA All-State team.
Four of the six players would make the 11AA All-State team on offense with Cooper Terwilliger and Carter Schiefelbein as a tight end and receiver would make the team as juniors. Terwilliger would grab 38 passes for 549 yards and four touchdowns. What he did with his stats, he did more that didn’t show up on the stat sheet with plenty of massive blocks in the run and pass game to help the offense succeed. Some of which helped Schiefelbein break massive play after massive play. He set the school record for both receptions and yards in a single season this year with 73 catches for 1379 yards. His speed was deadly in the offensive scheme as both guys will return for another season with the Govs. Steele says Terwilliger and Schiefelbein were the 1-2 punch all year…
On the offensive line, Tucker Otte and Max Bogenhagen, both seniors, would be selected to the All-State team. Otte didn’t finish the year with a leg injury, but showed enough to make the All-State team while Bogenhagen was solid the entire year on the line for the Govs. Offensive line may be one of the hardest spots to pick with the limited number of stats that can be shown, but Steele says both are very deserving, starting with Otte who made it even with the season ending injury…
Defensively, Sutton Sonnenschein would make the All-State team with Ayden Behm being an honorable mention from the defensive side. Sonnenschein had 50 tackles, but he had five pass break ups with six interceptions and also a forced fumble as he wrecked havoc on the defensive side all season. Behm would finish with 36 tackles including a tackle for loss and he had six pass break ups and five interceptions as a senior to help lead the Govs to another state title. Steele says starting with Behm, for a lot of teams he really came out of nowhere and surprised them…
With half of the All-State team for Pierre being juniors, the journey begins again to make the team next year, but also win another state title. Steele says it starts with a good offseason…
