The Parkview Auditorium might have been the best spot to be in the state on Tuesday for the SoDak 16 as both matches would be five set thrillers and both matches would be upset wins.
Starting in Class A, the first game of the night, the Rapid City Christian Lady Comets would pick up a five set win over Groton Area with scores of 25-18, 26-28, 25-21, 20-25 and 15-8 as the match was back and forth as you can get with neither team winning two sets in a row. Chloe Weber would lead all hitters on the night for the Lady Comets as she would finish with 33 on the night while teammate Faith King would had 17 while also having 41 assists for the night as well. Rapid City Christian improves to 29-11 and will be the seven seed in the Class A state tournament.
In the Class B SoDak 16 game, the Herreid/Selby Area Wolverines would get a five set upset win over Burke to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2017. The Wolverines would get the win 25-18, 12-25, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-13 as the game was even closer than the first match of the night. The Wolverines avenged its SoDak 16 loss from a couple of years ago to the Burke Cougars to reach the state tournament as the eight seed as they are the lowest seeded team to get the upset win on Tuesday. The Wolverines are now 26-6 while Burke finishes at 29-7. Herreid/Selby will get the daunting task of taking on the one loss top seeded Chester Area Flyers in the first round of the Class B state tournament on Thursday next week in Rapid City.
Regardless of who you were cheering for heading into the night, Fort Pierreās night was the best spot in the sate to be watching volleyball. All winners of the SoDak 16 games advance to the state tournament which begins next Thursday in Rapid City.
