PIERRE, (KCCR) — A task force looking for ways to relieve property tax burdens on South Dakotans recently released their recommendations to bring forward to the South Dakota Legislature this winter. District 24 Senator Jim Mehlhaff says the Task Force could have achieved a better result…
The recommendations include immediate property tax relief through a 120 million dollars tax rebate directly to homeowners using collected, but not spent tax revenue. Another recommendation is to make a five-percent cut in state government spending, which is estimated to save 123-million dollars to be used for property tax reduction. A third recommendation would keep a cut in sales tax that is set to expire and use that reduce property taxes. The last recommendation would take 25-percent of future state revenue growth to replace property tax revenue. All told, the recommendations would account for over 348-million dollars in total relief and about a 25-percent cut to homeowner property taxes. Additional recommendations include expanding tax relief programs for seniors and disabled veterans; election requirements for opt-outs on bond elections; electronic filing for faster, more accessible tax relief; directing all video lottery revenue to education and limiting public school spending on capitol projects.
