The Sully Buttes Chargers stepped into the Class 9B playoffs against a team they faced in the regular season. The result, a 42-8 victory over the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots Thursday night in Onida.
The last time these two teams met on September 12th, the Chargers used a stout aerial attack to pick apart the Patriot defense, but Hitchcock Tulare tried used their punishing run game to try to slow the Chargers down as Sully Buttes won 52-12 earlier.
Thursday night the Chargers stiffened up defensively, allowing only 52 yards of offense in the first half, and 152 yards total for the game. Meanwhile Sully Buttes, behind passing from Wesley Wittler racked up 236 yards through the air and 139 on the ground to finish with 375 yards total offense. Senior back Kadyn Westergren scored three times for 8-1 Sully Buttes, while Jett Yackley added two scores through the air, and passed for one more, his first TD pass of the season. Hitchcock Tulare finishes at 3-6 on the year.
Next up for Sully Buttes is also a familiar opponent, the Faulkton Area Trojans, who played the Chargers September 26th and lost at home 30-22. Catch the game Thursday night from the Garry Cunningham Sports Complex in Faulkton. The scheduled time has yet to be determined. Country 95.3 will be in Faulkton to make the call.
