Carter Merrill would go down with an injury in the first quarter and Pierre trailing 21-0 needed a spark plug, Jerren Deal’s four rushing touchdown and two passing scores would be the energy boost as Pierre comes back and wins 45-28 Friday night.
After an hour delay to start the game, the Pierre offense and defense was sluggish to get going. A pick six would make it 21-0 in the first quarter for Spearfish and then Merrill would have to be carted off the field with a right leg injury leaving what could have been disastrous for the Govs, but Deal started taking snaps at quarterback, becoming a dual threat and would finish the game with nearly 500 all-purpose yards. Pierre would get the deficit down to four at half time as Deal had an 11 and 12 yard rushing scores and Carter Templeton hit a 30 yard field as time expired in the second. The Governors forced four turnovers, three interceptions, two from Ayden Behm and grabbed a fumble as the Spearfish offense barely reached 100 yards of offense in the second half. Deal would throw for scores in the second half, one to Carter Schiefelbein and one to Cooper Terwilliger as Schiefelbein had 10 catches for 164 yards. Deal would finish 15-22 passing for 245 yards and then would run for 221 yards on 16 carries and four touchdowns as Pierre improves to 5-3 on the season heading into the final week of the regular season as Spearfish falls to 5-3.
Pierre will take on Douglas to close the season on Thursday. Coverage begins at 5:30 with kickoff at 6:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Blake Dean on the call.
