The Sully Buttes Charger led 22-0 with about three minutes left in the first half, then held on and scored late on a couple of daring plays to knock off Faulkton Area 30-22 in Faulkton Friday afternoon.
The Chargers used big plays to take the lead with a 50 yard run by running back Kadyn Westergren and a 39 yard scramble by quarterback Wesley Wittler, and a Wittler to Easton Moore two yard pass built the Chargers lead. Then, the Trojans started to find success scoring on a Spencer Melius 14 yard run before half to make it 22-8. The Trojans hooked up on a 46 yard pass from Melius to Korbin Stark to make it 22-16 in the third quarter. After another Charger punt, it was again Melius to Stark TD hookup, to tie the score at 22-22. The Trojans had two opportunities to make an extra point, but a penalty and failed kick kept the score tied. Sully Buttes had a few turnovers, an interception and a fumble, gave the Trojans excellent field position deep in Charger territory, but both times came up empty from the Charger 15 yard line, thanks to a stout defensive stand.
With time running out, the Chargers pulled out a couple of trick plays that caught Faulkton flatfooted, a 60 yard pass from Wittler to Hudson Barber to get them into range, and on fourth and four from the Trojan 24, Wittler faked a pitchout and found wideout Gavin Colson open in the endzone delivering a strike and a two point conversion gave the Chargers led 30-22 with seven seconds remaining. Faulkton passed downfield, but fumbled at midfield as time expired.
The 5-0 Chargers now have Homecoming next Friday, with a game against the Faith Longhorns, while 2-3 Faulkton travels to Eureka to face North Central Friday night. You can hear coverage of Sully Buttes volleyball Tuesday and Thursday night, along with the Charger football Friday on Country 95.3FM, with DT Meyer, the voice of the Chargers.
