The Pierre Governor soccer teams will be on the road today as the Govs will face the Mitchell Kernels with under a week left in the regular season.
The Governor girls will play first as they still sit in the top three of Class AA. The Govs are 8-2-1 and will face the 4-7 Kernels looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since early September. The Govs picked up a 2-0 shutout on Saturday at home against Tea while the Kernels lost to Brandon Valley 1-0 on Tuesday going into a three game losing streak. With three games remaining and all three teams above .500, the Kernels will have a difficult stretch to end the season, but can climb far in the standings with three wins. Pierre, on the other hand, will face all three teams below .500 and must win all three to hold a top four spot in the standings.
On the boys side, Pierre is 4-4-3 and are in 13th place in the AA standings, but face the 2-7-2 Kernels after tying Brandon Valley on Tuesday. Pierre has two of the last three opponents outside of the playoffs currently with Mitchell and then Huron next Tuesday. Pierre wants to beat the teams below them in the standings and climb the standings for a more favorable first round matchup as the Govs most likely won’t be home to open the playoffs.
Kickoff of the girls game will be at 4:00 with the boys game to follow at Joe Quintal Field in Mitchell.
