As every team in Central South Dakota knew Friday night; The team who wins the field position battle on a wet surface will have the advantage. The Sully Buttes Chargers used ground control football with just enough passing thrown in to defeat the Gettysburg Battlers 30-0 in Onida.
After a Wesley Wittler to Jett Yackley two yard TD to open the game, the Chargers went up 8-0. After a Gettysburg punt, Wittler carried around the right end for 57 yards to put Sully Buttes up 14-0 after a failed two point conversion. The score held up to halftime.
Both the Battlers and Chargers tried to establish a running attack to control the ball, and play keep away. Gettysburg had offensive troubles all night totaling only 28 yards offense for the game.
The Chargers meanwhile did have success, but had a lot tougher time getting yardage on a slippery field and a stout Battler defense. Although Sully Buttes did finish with 386 yards of offense for the game, they had five series end on downs along with the only lost fumble of the night.
Scores by Easton Moore from Wittler on a 20 yard strike, and a Wittler 15 yard run finished the scoring before the Chargers brought in second unit players.
Sully Buttes, now 4-0, will travel to Faulkton Friday afternoon to face the Faulkton Area Trojans–the team they split with last year, a loss in the regular season, and a state championship victory at the Dakotadome last November, 34-14. Kickoff is at 3:00.
The 0-5 Battlers get their bye week before a final three game push to the end of the season.
