During halftime of the Pierre Governor football Homecoming game against the Brookings Bobcats this weekend, the Governors will induct the team of 1964 into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
The 64 Governors went 8-1 with one of, if not, the toughest schedule ever attempted by Pierre and a team which allowed 13 points against all season. The Govs gave up two passing touchdowns for the only scores against them and while teams of the future broke records, this team set many records. This Governor team had nearly 2800 yards of total offense in nine games while holding their opponents to combining shy of 1100 yards. Pierre scored 179 points and had wins over Mitchell 20-0, O’Gorman 21-0, Chamberlain 35-0, Lead, 32-0, Winner 27-0 and Bismarck, Western North Dakota champions, 24-7. The lone loss came against Rapid City Central in a 6-0 defeat in a standing room crowd at Hollister Field. Pierre knocked off Huron in the final game of the year.
Pierre placed four on the All-State football team: Gaylord Sonnenschein, Quarterback, Rich Adams, fullback, Lyle Stuart, tackle, and Jack Robinson, tackle.
Pierre will honor the team during halftime of the Homecoming game.
