The 2025 season started late Friday night almost ending the first game on Saturday as the Pierre Governors beat the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles 9-6 in a defensive slugfest.
The start of the game was delayed two hours and 15 minutes and even had a plan in place to play on Saturday if they could not go which was how grim it looked to play football on Friday. However, Pierre and Aberdeen could take the field at 8:45 to start warm ups and at 9:15 the season was officially going. It took until the final second of the first half to get any points though as Logan Witte hit a 30 yard field goal to have Pierre lead 3-0 at the break. In the second half, the Governors would score its lone touchdown as Kaleb Lounsbury found Carter Schiefelbein, and with a corner slipping and falling in the tough field conditions, it left Schiefelbein open to win a 96 yard race down the field to score putting the Govs up 9-0. Aberdeen Central would score midway through the fourth on a one yard dive from Joey Dallman, but the Governor defense made one final stand to secure the win.
Witte and Porter Hunsley each had an interception on the night for the Govs while Lounsbury finished with over 146 yards passing and 72 yards rushing as the Govs fought through the tough night offensively on poor conditions.
Pierre will travel to Huron Friday for a contest against the Tigers. Coverage will start at 6:30 with kickoff at 7:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
