Using a balance of run and pass, the Sully Buttes Chargers picked up where they left off last season, and came away with a 36-0 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats in front of a hometown crowd in Onida Friday night.
The Chargers scored on five of their first six possessions while keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard with smothering defense. Senior quarterback Wesley Wittler controlled the flow of the offense by rushing for 147 yards while compiling 96 yards through the air on 8 of 15 passing. Senior wideout Gavin Colson finished his night with 59 yards passing while sophomore Jett Yackley also added 59 yards, both contributing a touchdown. Wittler scored twice on the ground and twice through the air.
Senior Kadyn Westergren did the damage on the ground as well with 86 yards on 13 attempts, and a rushing TD. Sully Buttes finished with 335 yards total offense on the night.
Meanwhile, Northwestern, under former Herreid/Selby Area head coach Clayton Randall, showed promise on the ground, but couldn’t sustain any offense under the Chargers solid defensive play holding the Wildcats to 75 yards total offense.
The 1-0 Chargers will travel to Burke to take on the Cougars, who throttled Colome 56-0 in Colome, while the 0-1 Wildcats will face Herreid/Selby Area, who beat Faith 50-0 Friday night. Wildcats coach Randall took the Wolverines to the state championship twice, only to come away a runner-up.
