PIERRE, (KCCR) — Vehicles have been using the John C. Waldron Memorial Bridge for months now, but finish and detail work remains. Crews have focused their efforts in the final months of the three-year project to completing bridge plazas under the approaches on either side of the Missouri River crossing. Work on the water is still taking place. Painting of the bridge’s superstructure is nearly finished and underwater demolition of the previous bridge’s is are about done. Sonar surveying is being used to confirm that no pieces of the old Waldron bridge remain in the water. Once that is done, crews will be demobilizing river-based equipment like barges and cranes. On land, colored concrete has been installed on the Pierre side with back-filling and seeding giving a finished look. The Pierre side is ready for the shared-use path to be installed. The final retaining wall has been finished on the Fort Pierre side. Grading and rip rap installation remain, which will open the door for concrete work and construction of an over look on the west side of the river.
