The Pierre Governor soccer teams would get the season underway this weekend as the Governor girls would beat Aberdeen Central 3-1 and Brookings 3-2 while the boys would fall 2-1 to Aberdeen and tie Brookings 1-1.
For the Governor girls, Pierre would get two goals in the first half and lead 2-0 after the first 40 minutes. The Govs would score a second half goal and keep the Golden Eagles at bay to get the first win of the season. Then on Saturday, Jasmine Jost would open up the scoring just a minute into the game coming off a corner kick to strike early. In the final 10 minutes of the half, Devyn Van Roekel would make it 2-0 coming off another set piece but the Govs would lead 2-1 at the break with a late Bobcats goal. Brookings would tie the game up and it would take until the final minute of the game before a foul in the box would give Pierre a penalty kick and Natalie Flottmeyer wouldn’t miss. The game winner gives Pierre a 2-0 record to start the season as Emlyn Swanson gets both wins in net.
The Governor boys would come up just short against Aberdeen on Friday as the Govs would get their lone goal by Lucas Hight from Caiden Ahartz, but dropping the first game of the season 2-1, still looking for their first win against the Golden Eagles since high school soccer was sanctioned. On Saturday, both goals would be scored early on as Brookings led 1-0 just seven minutes into the first half, but it only took a couple of minutes before Hekmat Ghasnavi would tie the game from Jacoby LaRoche. Both teams would bear down defensively and play to the draw as the Govs are 0-1-1 to start the season.
Pierre will quickly be back on the road on Tuesday taking on Roosevelt. The boys will kick off at 4:00 and the girls will follow at Roosevelt High School.
