PIERRE, (KCCR) — July runoff into the Missouri River continues at a below normal pace. Runoff above Sioux City, Iowa was an even two-million acre feet last month which was only 62-percent of average. Runoff continued to be below normal in the Fort Peck and Garrison reaches with average to above-average runoff in the river reaches south of the Oahe Dam. The annual runoff forecast above Sioux City sits at 19-point-two million acre feet or 75-percent of average. John Remus, Chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division for the U-S Army Corps of Engineers says while above-normal precipitation occurred in the Missouri River basin in July, much of the western basin like Montana and Wyoming are still very dry. Last week, the U-S Drought Monitor for South Dakota had 67-point-seven percent of South Dakota drought-free. The worst drought remains between Fort Thompson and Chamberlain along the Missouri River with severe drought and moderate drought extending out from Woonsocket to Okaton.
