PIERRE, (KCCR) — Scammers are continuing to sink their hooks into unsuspecting residents of Hughes County and elsewhere. In the latest instance, the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office says a Hughes County resident was recently duped out of 22-thousand dollars in a jury duty scam. The latest jury duty scam has the scammer calling and informing the potential victim they are representing the Sheriff’s Office and that they had failed to appear for jury duty. The scammer then says the caller could be arrested if they did not immediately pay the fine via cryptocurrency. The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office says a similar scam is currently being conducted under the guise of the Department of Transportation where the scam caller threatens an immediate fine or other penalties for not paying traffic or parking tickets or toll fees. Attorney General Marty Jackley says anyone getting a call or message about jury duty should contact their local clerk of courts office to verify. Sheriff Patrick Callahan says his office would never demand payment over the phone or by any form of cryptocurrency.
