It was after the first year of Steve Steele’s tenure as head coach of the Pierre Governors the team entered the year not looking to defend a state title. After that year, Pierre rattled off seven straight state championships. Now, the feel is different like it was in 2018.
It’s an unprecedented and almost unbelievable run for the Governors having won seven straight state titles. It was 23 straight playoff wins for Pierre and Steele’s record as a head coach in playoff games is 24-2. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, but the end can be short lived and the Governors want to get back on the mountain top again this year. The Governors came up just short in a bid for eight straight state titles in a 14-13 loss to Watertown last November. A nucleus of Governors return with several being just juniors heading into fall camp and those juniors, now seniors were able to get their first taste of varsity time last fall.
