Carter Sanderson was drafted in late June in the sixth round to the Pittsburgh Penguins as the first ever South Dakotan drafted. He continues his summer before heading back to Muskegon in August for the next USHL season.
While it won’t wear off any time soon he was drafted to an NHL team, his hockey journey continues just like it was last year. He will remain at least another season with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL before possibly going to the University of North Dakota his freshman year of college. Sanderson joined Calling All Sports in Mid-July and says he spent eight days in Pittsburgh at the prospect camp…
Sanderson says when Pittsburgh drafted him they said they liked his physicality…
Sanderson was the second youngest draftee this year, was the third youngest player on Muskegon and when he was an eighth grader was the youngest player on the Oahe Capitals and one of the youngest in the league in that season. He says it’s helped him compete with kids older than him for so many years and has produced a lot of friendships with the guys he played with for Oahe…
While things haven’t completely changed for Sanderson, he does enjoy seeing kids excited to see him…
Sanderson will head back and play for Muskegon. The Lumberjacks will be in Sioux Falls this year to take on the Stampede on Friday and Saturday, January 9-10.
