PIERRE, (KCCR) — An active weather pattern has brought drought relief to many parts of South Dakota. And despite areas of no drought getting larger, drought is expanding in the middle of the state. Statewide no drought areas make of 67-percent of South Dakota with abnormally dry areas dropping six-percent; moderate drought three-percent and severe by one-tenth. However, severe drought has expanded between Fort Thompson and Chamberlain along the Missouri River. That area is now the worst drought conditions in the state. Sixteen-percent of Lyman County is in severe drought with 99-percent in moderate drought. Buffalo County is 100-percent in moderate drought with 21-percent now in severe. Brule County saw moderate drought increase to 100-percent with severe drought making up eight-percent along the river. A large area of moderate drought extends from Belvidere to Woonsocket. Pockets of moderate drought also are found in Custer and Sully Counties.
